First-Time Traveler's Guide to Golmud, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture 🌄

Hey travel lovers! 👋 Are you ready for an adventure in Golmud, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture? I've got you covered with this ultimate 4-day itinerary that's perfect for first-timers! 🌟

Day 1: Exploring Golmud Downtown

Upon arrival in the afternoon, head straight to Shibang Plaza, the heart of Golmud. Feel the local vibe and treat yourself to some sweet apricots and watermelons – they're a local delicacy! 🍉🍊 If you have some extra time, grab a coffee at Wuli Coffee. Their aesthetic is on point, and the coffee's not bad too! ☕️ Taxis are plenty in the city, and you won't need a ride-hailing app. Plus, they're super cheap! 🚕

Day 2: East Taijinaier Lake & Water Yadan

Get ready for a day of breathtaking views! 🌊 East Taijinaier Lake is a paradise on earth. Snap some photos by the lake – just avoid wearing pure white, it'll make your skin look dull. Don't forget your sunglasses; the reflection can be quite strong! 🌞 On the way to Water Yadan, stop by Longji Mountain for a panoramic view from the top. The hike up is worth it for the stunning vistas! 🌄

Day 3: Chaerhan Salt Lake

Join a half-day tour with a local Qinghai travel agency. For those aiming for light green lake water and the viral swing, join the morning group to avoid backlight. If you prefer deep green hues and scenic views, opt for the afternoon tour (just be prepared for some sun exposure). ☀️ The tour wraps up in about 3 hours.

Day 4: Hoh Xil

A day trip to Hoh Xil should cost you no more than 300 yuan – that's a fair price! 🐎 This route is packed with attractions. If you're traveling with friends, you can ask the driver to skip Kunlun Holy Spring (it's just a well) and head to Kunlun Grand Canyon instead. It's a lesser-known gem with breathtaking scenery and opportunities for stream walking! 🏞️ After Kunlun Pass, Hoh Xil is the main event. Bring your telephoto lens and keep it handy; you might catch a glimpse of wolves chasing Tibetan antelopes (though I missed that, I did see plenty of antelopes!). 📸

What to Wear:

Practicality is key here. A windbreaker, hat, sunglasses, long pants, and sneakers are must-haves. A rain-proof windbreaker is even better, as I experienced a sudden downpour in Hoh Xil! 🌧️ For photo ops, coordinate your outfits with the dominant colors of each attraction. I stuck to my windbreaker for most of the trip!

Food Recommendations:

  • Kuangguo Mutton and Mutton Barbecue: The mutton here is delicious and free from that gamey smell. Kuangguo Mutton is similar to Sichuan-style dry pots; it's absolutely addictive! 🍲
  • Qinghai Earth Pot Hotpot: A variety of veggies and meats simmered in beef bone broth in a copper pot. It's comforting, especially if you're feeling homesick. 🍲
  • Hongqi Jiubao: A must-try for Sichuan food lovers! Their砂锅菜 (casserole dishes) are out of this world, especially the Potato and Beef Stew. 🍲

Travel Tips:

  • Golmud's airport has flights to Xining every day, with additional flights to Xi'an on certain days. For other destinations, Xining is a good transit hub. ✈️
  • The city has over 1,000 taxis, with a starting fare of 5 yuan. Public transportation is also convenient with 9 main bus lines, mostly priced at 1 yuan per ride. 🚌
  • Due to Golmud's high altitude and dry climate, remember to moisturize your skin, wear layered clothing, and take it easy to acclimate to the high altitude. 🏔️

Now that you've got your Golmud itinerary, it's time to pack your bags and hit the road! 🛫🧳 Happy travels! 🌈
